Now the dirty work starts! The movement is moved to a separate workbench where all the gears and wheels are totally dismantled. The barrels’ mainsprings have been let down prior to taking the plates apart so that work on the movement can continue without any power on. |

This shows one of the barrels holding the main spring from which the clock takes its driving power. Evidence of dirt, grit and bound oil accumulated inside the barrel. The main spring has to be taken out of the barrel for a thorough cleaning. |

|
In the cleaning process all three barrels are inspected, opened. Each mainspring is taken out of the barrel for cleaning or replacement (as the case may be) and re-oiled as necessary. |

After all the necessary work has been carried out, the movement is assembled and put on test in the clock cabinet. The chime hammers are also set as necessary and it is a pleasure to listen to the Westminster and Aver Maria once again. |
