"Hermle" is an important German Clock Manufacturer who produce a very large range of clock movements.

This one is a 4/4 Westminster Chime, weight driven movement.

Hermle 01

The movement has been taken out of the clock case and is inspected before a complete overhaul is taken in hand.

The clockwork's back plate housing the chiming mechanism to be examined for wear in pivot holes before dismantling.

Hermle 03

A close examination of the back plate. Wear on pivot holes show excessive use of oil which the client that would solve his problems. The facts show that oiling and / or spraying dirty clock movements produces undesirable results.

Consequently, a professional clock repairer must thoroughly clean the pivot holes and apply bushes as and where necessary to restore to working order.

Hermle 04

The front plate shown from the inside. An example of accumulated wear – a common occurrence on most clock works. The cleaning process is a delicate process as all holes must been cleaned and wear has to be rectified by installing new bushes.

Hermle 05

A closer look at the centre wheel shows old oil on the teeth. This movement was sprayed by its owner who used a water repellant type that is normally used on locks and other metal. This kind of spray, widely applied in domestic uses, is NOT suitable for clock mechanisms and caused more damage that one thinks.
